An innovative and effective live radio session with in the community to create awareness on child labour

Posted on: 6th March, 2024

In our pursuit to advance education and combat child labour, Nascent RDO Uganda implemented an innovative strategy to engage a broader spectrum of stakeholders. Collaborating with Ateker radio station in Moroto District, we established a community studio to facilitate maximum participation of community members in a live radio talk show.

Unlike the traditional style talk shows, the leveraged innovative approach focused on having a live discussion happen physically within the community and aired live on Ateker FM radio. This platform transcended community boundaries, reaching beyond the immediate community to disseminate information and messages against child labour. The format of the talk show encouraged active involvement from various sectors, including local government representatives, Nanyidik Primary School administration, community elders, and community residents, fostering a collaborative environment conducive to meaningful dialogue.

Among the participants of the talk show included the District Education Officer (DEO), Community Development Officer (CDO), Headmaster of Nanyidik Motivational Centre, a Community Mobiliser, Work No Child Business (WNCB) staff, and community members of the Nanyidik Community.

The talk show tackled the paramount significance of education, the pernicious effects of child labour, emphasizing its detrimental impact on children, communities, and the overall human capital of the country. The resounding success of the community live talk show was evidenced by the active participation of 43 (12 female & 31 male) community members, indicative of the widespread support and engagement garnered by this innovative approach of conducting a talk show.

This approach revolutionized the traditional talk show style to ensure maximum outreach and engagement. This innovative strategy not only allowed us to reach a wider audience to further the awareness, but also enabled us to record and share the discussions with the community at large. The enthusiastic response from the community was palpable, as they showed dedication to eradicating child labour. During the broadcast, the people of Nanyidik passionately advocated for education and strongly denounced child labour practices.
