Iganga, Uganda, June 11, 2025 - Bubaka Play Hub came alive with colour, laughter and boundless energy as Nascent Research and Development Organization (Nascent RDO-U), through the Foundations for the Future project, joined the global celebration of the International Day of Play. Marked under the theme “Choose Play Every Day,” the celebration was supported by International Child Development Initiatives (ICDI).

The event brought together 153 children aged 0 - 8 years and 87 caregivers, turning the play hub into a lively space for learning, connection and creativity. Beyond the excitement, the day highlighted the critical role of play in nurturing children’s cognitive, physical, emotional and social development during the early years.

International Day of Play is observed annually to amplify global recognition of play as a fundamental child right. It calls on families, educators, communities and policymakers to place play at the centre of early childhood development, where it lays the foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.

Celebrating Play Through Culture and Creativity

Children led the day with prayers, setting a joyful and reflective tone. This was followed by a rich mix of activities including sack races, bottle bowling, painting, clay modelling and traditional dance. Locally inspired play materials, such as banana fibres, recycled bottles and clay, demonstrated that meaningful play does not require expensive toys, but rather creativity, time and responsive caregiving.

For many caregivers, this was a powerful learning moment. They were encouraged to replicate similar play experiences at home using locally available materials. As one caregiver shared, “Through play, I connect with my child and understand her better.”

Engaging Caregivers and Promoting Inclusive Parenting

While children played, caregivers participated in interactive learning sessions facilitated by the Iganga District Early Childhood Development (ECD) focal person and community facilitators. Discussions focused on how play supports language development, motor skills, emotional regulation and strong parent-child bonds.

The active participation of male caregivers stood out, reflecting a growing shift toward shared caregiving responsibilities. Many expressed renewed commitment to engaging their children through play and supporting nurturing care within their families.

Strengthening Partnerships for Child Development

Local leaders, teachers and ECD committee members who attended the celebration applauded the initiative and called for more community-based play activities. Their involvement underscored the value of collaboration in advancing holistic early childhood development.

Health education was also integrated into the event. The Assistant Health Community Facilitator conducted on-site sensitization on child nutrition, hygiene and wellness, with caregivers receiving tailored guidance for their children.

Looking Ahead

Building on the success of the celebration, Nascent RDO-U plans to expand access to play materials, train caregivers in making local toys, reach more remote communities and strengthen the role of male caregivers as play champions, ensuring that play remains a daily and transformative experience for every child.
